Lib Dems Extremely Concerned as More Bus Services Cut
Sheffield Liberal Democrats have expressed huge disappointment after it was announced Powells and CT Plus will stop running a large number of services in the city from next Monday 8th August.
The services effected in Sheffield include the A1, X20, 5, 6, 10, 10a, 35a, 61, 62 and 201. The cuts come just days after reductions across South Yorkshire to previously subsidised services and ahead of huge cuts this autumn that will see the city lose up to 1in 3 of its bus routes.
Lib Dem Transport Spokesperson Councillor Andrew Sangar says, “We are seeing more cuts to services coming again and again, the city simply cannot go on like this. Soon, lots of people all around Sheffield will have no way of getting to work, school, or the shops; frankly, they will have no way of living their lives.”
“The Liberal Democrats have been pushing for franchising, whereby the buses will be brought back under public control. It could have been done years ago by Labour, but we are now demanding that the new Mayor Oliver Coppard gets on with it, and quickly as there is no time to lose if we are to save Sheffield buses.”
“Buses are a fantastic way of reducing congestion and combatting climate change, which we obviously support, but it is important to acknowledge that buses are also a necessity for thousands of people across Sheffield. For years we’ve seen fares being raised and routes abandoned; something needs to change, and soon.”
