Beighton Liberal Democrats celebrating successful campaign for 20mph speed zone
Local Lib Dem councillors Kurtis Crossland, Ann Woolhouse and Bob McCann are delighted with the approval of a new 20mph speed limit in Beighton. The scheme was approved at the Council’s Transport, Regeneration and Climate committee today, and is planned to be introduced in February 2023.
The Lib Dem councillors have campaigned for years to improve road safety locally and are happy this project has progressed. Though there were several comments on the proposal, less than 10% of these were formal objections.
The proposed 20mph zone includes the entire village of Beighton, beginning at Robin Lane at the north and extending down to Beighton Allotments. West Street is excluded in the plans.
The new speed limit will be indicated by traffic signs and road markings. No physical changes such as speed bumps will be included in the new plans. New speed limit signs will be installed at road junctions on the boundary of the new schemes, and smaller ‘repeater’ signs will be attached to existing lampposts to remind drivers of the new rules.
Cllr Ann Woolhouse said “This is something that we’ve been wanting to see for several years, and I’m very happy that it’s finally got to this stage.
I’m especially happy to see the new limit on Grange Road, outside the primary school. Having a 20mph speed limit is so much safer for children who are coming in and out of school. I’ve been working to see how we can improve safety around Reignhead School for some time, and I hope that the scheme can be implemented as soon as possible.”
Cllr Kurtis Crossland added “I’m pleased to see the Committee has approved the scheme. We've been contacted by people all over the area concerned about road safety. This new speed limit is a big step towards making our roads safer for everyone.”
