Shaffaq Mohammed - Dedicated, caring, and committed to Sheffield
Roots in steel
Shaffaq Mohammed's story begins with his family's move to Sheffield to work in the city's renowned steel industry. Growing up in this hardworking environment, Shaffaq learned the values of dedication and community from an early age.
His first job was at the Co-op in Hillborough where he started as a warehouse assistant, and went on to manage multiple stores. He went on to study Business at the University of Sheffield.
Building ladders of opportunity
He then became a youth worker, Shaffaq dedicated himself to creating pathways for disadvantaged young people to access work and education opportunities.
His hands-on experience with local challenges inspired him to become a councillor for the Liberal Democrats in Sheffield, where he focused on building a more inclusive and supportive community.
A Principled Councillor
As a councillor, Shaffaq Mohammed has always been guided by strong principles and a commitment to justice. He was one of the first councillors to speak out against the Labour council's street-tree felling saga. Shaffaq has also stood up to Yorkshire Water, challenging them on the Stannington gas floods and their irresponsible dumping of sewage into local rivers.
Shaffaq believes in putting people first and understands that those in charge don't always have all the answers.
Speaking truth to power
Shaffaq's commitment and leadership took him to the European Parliament, where he represented Yorkshire and the Humber as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP). In this role, he passionately advocated for environmental sustainability, human rights, and opportunities for young people, ensuring that the voices of his constituents were heard.
Shaffaq was renowned for sticking to his values and speaking truth to power—always putting Sheffield and his constituents over party politics.
